Coaching The Full Back in a Functional Practice

Organisation

  • 6 v 6 plus the Keeper.
In this function I am coaching the left full back (1) so I am only using the players he is likely to use. The two central defenders, the right full back (or take him out and use him as a target man) and two central midfield players. The the attacking team have four in midfield and two upfront. The target areas represent the areas I want him to distribute the ball first e.g. to the winger or the forwards feet. The red zone is not in play because I am not using that area of the pitch. Start with a pass from the central midfield to the wide man as shown.

Key Points
  1. Position in relation to the ball
  2. Preparation. Body shape, feet in right position, reading ball and winger and where other defenders are. Vision.Ready to defend.
  3. Priorities. Intercept, Spoil-maybe you can spoil his possession (slide in), hold him up don't let him turn or play forward.
  4. Pressure, patience and control.
  5. Prevention. Going one way or another. Prevent him getting his head up, going on strong side and getting behind you.
  6. Possession.

As the ball is played to the wide man

Looking for:

  • The full backs position. Get him in the right position to defend-move to close down the ball.
  • Is there a likelihood of a pass to the winger.
As soon as he drops his head to pass
  • Can he play behind me
  • Can he have it in front of me
  • Is he checking play
  • Are you too tight or too loose.
As soon as pass is played. Positioning and preparation
  • Can I intercept
  • If not can you spoil
  • Close down properly.
  • What pace is on the ball
When the winger has the ball
  • Make sure he doesn't beat you on the first touch. Don't close down too close or too fast or he will nick it past you.
  • Beware of give and go with supporting players
  • Body shape- is he going around me.
  • Position of centre backs and strikers.
Now look for closing down properly
  • Balance. Does he show which way to play. If playing infield can you cut the line out. Angle of approach should stop him playing down the line.
  • After 1st touch get into position. Split legs, knees bent, focus on the ball and ready to shift feet one way or another.
Closing down when ball at feet
  • Get in position
  • Gap between legs, get the stance right.
  • Get down and stay down, resist putting first foot forward.
  • Is he too tight too soon.
  • Too loose so that the winger can easily control the ball
  • Look at the positioning of his feet etc.
  • Pressure cutting off line-angle of approach and patience.
  • If he keeps it be patient
  • Get your right foot level with the ball so he can't go inside
Showing Inside
  • Show where you want him to go and make him go by getting there early
  • Back off, back off until you get support.
  • Track him down the line
  • Try to sneak a glance
  • Don't take pressure off the ball
  • Anticipate waht is likely to happen
  • If he plays it and runs make sure he doesn't get it back
  • If he comes inside deny him entry into the box.
The Role of the Full Back
  • Provide a wide outlet in flank positions in all 3rds of the field.
  • Support behind and ahead of other players who take up flank positions in attacking play.
  • Provide a support role for either attack or defence if not actively involved in the attacking build up.
  • comanise, control and prevent penetration on the flanks by opponents.
  • To support and cover central defender in defensive phases of play.
  • To defend the far post area from opponents flank attacks unless required to cover
Responsibilities
  • Support, retain and progress any possession in flank positions in all 3rds
  • Counter attack and support central areas wherever possinble.
  • Alone or in combination with team mates create situations in flank positions.
  • Reajust position and priorities when not on the ball
  • comanise defence tactics
  • Prevent crosses
  • Defend central areas.
Skills
  • Passing ability over all distances
  • Shorter range, interpassing and combination plays
  • Running with the ball
  • Crossing skills and attacking skills when driven inside
  • Marking and all 1v1 skills. Intercepting, containing, blocking crosses and passes.
