Coaching The Sweeper in a Phase of Play

Organisation

  • 8 v 8
  • Two target areas 20yds wide
  • Server plays to 02 or 03, the player he passes to joins in.
  • Reds the attackers try to score
  • Blues the defenders on gaining possession attack and score by one player running with the ball over the halfway line inside the target area.

Key points

Sweeper

  • Positioning, Between ball and penalty spot as ball moved across pitch. 10 yds behind markers. Flat-between back markers the nearer to goal the opposition play. In position to be first if needed to passes played behind the defence.
  • Role: communication, comanise, read the play.
  • Importance of 35yd line (can mark it for him) See the sweeper

Markers

  • Discipline, concentration to man-mark opponent.
  • Marking roles- quality, position, distance, stance.
  • Read the man on the ball, watch your opponent.
  • Intercept and break, spoil and recover, hold and stick to your opponent when he has possession.
  • Covering wingbacks in 1 v 1
  • Tracking runners to back of defence
  • Defending on take overs, wall passes
  • Near-side marking, far-side marking.

On receiving possession 02 and 03 may run the ball forward or pass to attackers as appropriate.

Key Points

Sweeper

  • Positioning as above
  • When and where to come forward to defend against threats.
  • Support markers (X5, X4) being attacked in 1 v 1 situations
  • Positioning on crosses
  • Importance of 35yd line.

Markers

  • Discipline and quality of marking
  • When tight, when loose mark.

Midfield

  • Countering the runners from deep, e.g. 02, 03
  • Covering wing backs
  • Pressurising and defending in 1 v 1.
