Counter Attacking: Pass and Move

Organisation

  • Grid is 30 x 10 yards.
  • Players line up as in diagram 1.
  • Try to get as many of the elements of Counter Attack play in.
  • Players line up behind X5, pass and follow your ball.
Exercise
  • Player X1. Passes square to player X2
  • Player X2. Intercepts the ball. Now the counter attack is on. Can he run with the ball or pass to Player X3 who is in a better position.
  • Player X3. Opens out and passes square.
  • Player X4. Intercepts and runs with the ball or passes to the new Player X1.
  • Player X5. Takes X1's place.

Look for quality in this warm up. Crisp accurate passing acceleration when intercepting the ball.

Progression

Add player X6. He acts as a supporting player for X2 or X4. Still pass and follow your ball.

  • Player X1. Passes square to player X2
Player X2. Intercepts the ball. He now passes to X6 and moves for the return pass. He then plays the ball to X3. You can progress to giving X2 the decision on whether to run with the ball, play the wall pass or pass straight to X3.
  • Player X3. Opens out and passes square.
  • Player X4. Intercepts the ball. He now passes to X6 and moves for the return pass. He then plays the ball to X1. You can progress to giving X2 the decision on whether to run with the ball, play the wall pass or pass straight to X1.
  • Player X5. Takes X1's place.
  • Player X6. Acts as a wall. You can progress so X6 passes one touch to X3,, X3 could now play a one-two with X2
