Finishing from Crosses in a Functional Practice

Organisation

  • As diagram.
  • Player A passes to player B, who passes back for player A to cross.
  • Player B passes to area 1, 2 or 3 according to the coaches instructions.
  • Alternate sides.
  • Players stand in lines at D and E, they work as a pair attacking the cross.
  • The purple player is the recommended coaches position. Have two defenders ready in bibs for later on.

Winger

After first pass look up, on return cross first time, don't run around the ball, hit it side on. With the delivery from area 1, aim for the second 6 yard box.

Centre Forwards

You have to get into the box as quick as possible. Just get there, one should go near post and one should go penalty spot, but there is no need to cross.

Demo

Delivery's, where do we want them.
Can it go low and hard in front of the keeper into the 2nd 6 yard box. Between the last defender and the Keeper.
Can it go long and curved to the back post. Etc.

Progression 1

Opposite server B hits the back post. Player C alternates with B. Now we are covering the near, middle and back post. Crossing player can now have a touch before crossing.

Progression 2

One defender now joins in with the attackers. Alternate the defenders one at a time. The defender must pick up one of the attackers. We now have 2 v 1 in the middle plus one coming in at the back. Now deliver from area 2. Player B should pass further down the line. Look for a low cross in front of the keeper and behind the defender. One cross should not beat all, so the furthest player from the ball should assess the flight of the ball before sprinting in. If the ball misses everyone can we check back out for the cut back. Always play to the death.

Observation
  • Do two players need to get into this position.
  • You have to look and assess the flight of the ball.
Can one player hold his run in the middle giving an option for the cut back to the penalty spot.
  • Can we get server B into the penalty spot if the ball is crossed from further down the line. We can have more movement with more time.
Progression 3

Now use two defenders, therefore 2 v 2 in the middle plus one wide player coming in. Serve passes short or long for the winger, don't make it predictable. Remember-

  • Early cross, quick runs
  • Later cross, runs and movement
  • If its a poor cross switch on you may get a second bite.
Demo
  • How to get across a player
  • Timing of runs- you can walk them through it if you want to.
Progression 4

Add a defender behind player B. Player C if not enough players. Player B will have to shield the ball and then play it down the line. Player C now chases player A. Player A can we curl it or play it around the defender. You can also send another defender from the middle. Therefore 1 v 1 down the line, 2 v 3 in the middle plus one wide man coming in.

Key Points
  1. Observation. Head up. Sometimes changes with dribbler.
  2. Technique.
    Has he curved his run
What part of the foot or ball has he used
    Fast foot for curler
Approach and contactDecision of cross. Which area and to whom
  3. Finish
    Accuracy
    What type
    Rebounds
Is there a cross coming in
Earlier the cross the quicker the run
Timing of runs and check outs.
