Dealing with Crosses, in a Functional Practise

Organisation
  • One player, X and three servers stand on either side of the penalty area.
  • The Player X stands on the edge of the box, the three servers face him.
  • Alternate sides.

The Goalkeeper starts by throwing to server S.1, the middle player, who plays the ball into player X, X has three options:-

  1. Down the line for S.2
  2. Back to S.1.
  3. Inside to S.3. for central crosses.

The Goalkeeper should throw the ball,then compose himself and look for his starting position. Start with one defender moving into the box, when your happy with the Keepers communication add a further defender and two attackers. The Keeper should dominate his defenders and call , squeeze up,hold,away and Keepers.

Key Points
  1. Starting position.
  2. Assess the flight,pace and trajectory of the ball. If the ball is going out make sure the Keeper sees it out.
  3. Decision. Should I stay or should I go.
  4. Communication of decision, good clear load information.
  5. Technique. Catch, punch or deflect. Call early-attack late.
  6. Second saves
