Winger Crossing in a Functional Practice

Organisation
  •  X1 beats the Defender on the wing and crosses early into the prime target area.
  • Two forwards and one Defender run in to meet the cross.
  • You must get lots of crosses in so make sure your winger has a good starting position, ideally an overlap taking him clear of the Defender.
  • The Full-back should apply little pressure to begin with, more as you progress.

Progress to

  • Two Forwards and two Defenders running in,
  • Cones are moved to the edge of the area so the winger gets to the byeline,
  • Another Attacker running in and looking for the pull back.

Key Points

  1. First touch.Look up after every touch because the picture might change.
  2. Observation,head up
    • Full Back,His pressure depends on where and when to cross.
    • Goalkeeper. If the Goalkeeper is on the near post then the far post cross is the better option.
    • Strikers.Play the Ball in front so they can attack it.
  3. Decision of cross.
    • An early cross best between the last Defender and the Goalkeeper is best.Low driven because the Ball arrives quicker than a lofted cross.
    • Position of Goalkeeper.
    • Bending the Ball might eliminate the Goalkeeper.
  4. Technique of cross.Head height and below.
    When crossing from the byeline,
    • If space between the last Defender and Goalkeeper then a low driven hard cross between them.
    • If Defenders are back and adjusted we must eliminate them, therefore chip to the back post or pull the Ball back to a supporting player.
  5. End product.Plenty of good attitude. If you don't buy a ticket you can't win the lottery. So be brave.
