Dealing With The Back Pass in a Functional Practice

Organisation
  • Three players stand on the edge of the penalty area as shown.
  • Players should come short or long to change the passing angles,
  • lots of opposite movements.

Exercise

  1. Start by player 1 passing back to the Goalkeeper
    • Keeper passes to player 3.
    • Player 3 passes back to the Keeper.
    • Keeper passes to player 2.
    • Player 2 passes back to the Keeper.
    • Keeper passes to player 1.
    • Then start again.
  2. The Goalkeeper must now shout his decision of pass i.e. Chip or drive.
  3. Introduce another ball. Two between them.
  4. Introduce players running in on the Goalkeeper.
Key Points
  1. Ready to receive, supporting angle and distance.
  2. 1st touch. You don't want the ball stuck under your feet.
  3. Awareness of defenders and attackers.
  4. Accuracy and weight passing. To feet or space.
Throwing

Instead of a back pass its a shot. The Goalkeeper must save and then throw with the appropriate technique.
