The Techniques of Shooting

ANALYSIS

  • A high percentage of opportunities to shoot are not taken
  • If shots are not taken matches are lost
  • At the highest level the average number of shots per goal was 13 and 1 goal from every 7 attempts
  • If a team can achieve 10 shots on target it vill give an 86% chance of Winning
  • In all analysis carried out no team that achieved 10 shots or more lost a match
  • All teams will benefit from practice that increases shots at goal
  • Practice that improves accuracy is also very important

ATTITUDES

  • CRITICISM: Must be constructive and positive
  • ASSERTION: Shooting is an act of self assertion
  • CORRECT PRACTICE: Must be related
  • COURAGE: Realistic practice will overcome the fear of being injured
KEY FACTORS
  • Look at the ball
  • Head steady
  • Body stance
  • Body movement
  • Shoot at all times except
    • Very poor angle
    • Very long distance (This may be debatable as there exceptions to this)
    • When a shot is blocked
  • Shoot through the middle/top of the ball (lift heel)
  • Strike with the laces

ORGANISATION, DIRECTION AND PROGRESSION
  • Whenever possible practice should be carried out with an appropriate sized goal
  • X2 serves to Xl who shoots
  • X6 serves to X4 who shoots
  • Players shoot with the left and right foot
  • Players follow in for rebounds
  • To begin the practice no opposition
  • Servers follow the ball to provide opposition
  • Football must be struck first time

THE ABOVE APPLY TO THE FOLLOWING PRACTICES

  • Ball rolling across the player on the ground
  • Ball rolling away from the player
  • Ball rolling towards the player
  • Ball in the air across the player
  • Ball in the air away from the player
  • Ball in the air towards the player

SHOOTING: OUTSIDE THE PENALTY BOX

KEY FACTORS

  • Check the position of the goal keeper
  • Adjust the body to prevent over reaching
  • Be confident
  • Be aggressive
  • Use:
    • Power shots
    • Chipped shots
    • Serving shots

comANISATION, DIRECTION AND PROGRESSION

  • A. Sl - S4 serve balls to XI
  • XI adapts a balanced position and strikes 1 or 2 touch at goal
  • X2 - X5 can provide pressure
  • B. GKX serves XI - X4 who shoot at GKO
  • X5 is for rebounds or setting up XI - X4
  • Players must stay in there areas
  • An extra 0 and X can be added making 5 v 2

SHOOTING: INSIDE THE PENALTY AREA

KEY FACTORS

  • Head steady
  • Contact through the top of the ball
  • Moving in one direction before moving and checking and making space
  • Receiving the ball and turning in one movement
  • Shooting on the half turn
  • Letting the ball run either past or through the legs before turning and shooting
  • Feinting to shoot to unbalance the defender before moving to one side to shoot

ORGANISATION, DIRECTION AND PROGRESSION

  • A. XI strikes at goal with service from SI - S2 0 Sl - S4 can follow service
  • Introduce 01 versus XI, XI chooses server
  • B. 2 v 2 G KX serves to XI or X2 to score
  • GKO will do the same for 01 - 02 to score
  • If not 2 goals then work to 1
  • C. 4 v 4 in 2 goals
  • a 3 teams of 2 if only 1 goal

SHOOTING. BEATING THE GOAL KEEPER WHEN CLEAR OF DEFENCE

KEY FACTORS

  • Check position of GK
  • Xl must make decision to:
    • (1) Chip GK
    • (2) Shoot past GK
    • (3) Dribble around GK
  • Coach should check this decision making
  • Play the ball forward well out of feet

ORGANISATION, DIRECTION AND PROGRESSION

  • A. S I serves the ball to Xl who dribbles forward and attempts to score
  • B. SI serves to Xl who either dribbles and takes on 01 or passes to X2 or X3
  • No offside
  • C. 02 and X4 are added
  • After the first pass no offside
  • 01 and 02 must challenge the player with ball outside the penalty area

REBOUNDS AND ATTACKING THE FAR POST AREA

KEY FACTORS

  • Player shooting from wide angle - concentration on the far post area
  • Strike the ball low and hard (laces heel up)
  • Strike across the ball (swerve)
  • Supporting run to the far post and near post
  • Body angle
  • Timing of run is important

ORGANISATION, DIRECTION AND PROGRESSION

  • Sl serves to X2. 01 moves to X2
  • X2 can pass to Xl or X3
  • No offside
  • Progress by adding 02 and 04
  • After first touch no offside
