The Technique of Heading the Ball

KEYFACTORS

  • Courage
  • Eyes on the ball
  • Head with the forehead
  • Contact above the middle of the ball
  • Power from correct stance: mouth closed, legs, torso and neck
  • Arms to assist guiding the ball onto the head
  • Looking for space at the near post, far post and middle of goal - glancing and power headers

ORGANISATION, DIRECTION AND PROGRESSION

  • A. XI serves to oneself and tries to score past X2
  • X2 continues this sequence to XI
  • When confident X2 serves to XI
  • Standing, jumping and diving headers
  • Progress to 2 v 2 movement of the players

HEADING: FOR GOAL

KEYFACTORS

  • Courage
  • Eyes on the ball
  • Head with the forehead to glance the ball
  • Contact with the side or bottom of the ball
  • Move to the ball

ORGANISATION, DIRECTION AND PROGRESSION

  • B. X3 serves to X2 who attempts to glance the ball past Xl
  • Xl serves to X2 who attempts to glance the ball past X3
  • C. Progress into 2 V 2

HEADING: RELATED PRACTICE

THROW HEAD CATCH

KEY FACTORS

  • Be alert when possession is won - setting up play
  • Movement of players to create space
  • Movement of player to exploit space
  • Near post, far post and split runs
  • When the ball arrives - technique is used
  • End product

ORGANISATION, DIRECTION AND PROGRESSION

  • 5 V 5 or 6 V 6
  • Free zone to set play up (5 yards)
  • If the ball goes to ground then possession is lost to the other team
  • If the ball is caught after a throw then a penalty is awarded to the other team
  • To keep the game fast and flowing don't allow players to take their time over penalties (ie a 10 second rule)

  • Xl making a near post run
  • X3 making a far post run
  • 0 X4 making a split run
  • X2 makes a run to draw 06 so that X3 can exploit the space left

HEADING DEFENSIVE

KEY FACTORS

  • Courage
  • Eyes on the ball
  • Head with the forehead
  • Contact with the bottom of the ball
  • Power from correct stance mouth closed, knees bent and attack the bottom of the ball
  • Go for height
  • Go for height and direction and put your own name on the ball
  • Decision making with the attacker and other defenders

ORGANISATION, DIRECTION AND PROGRESSION

  • A. Xl and X2 serve themselves and see how high they can head the ball
  • Xl heads high then X2 tries to head the ball as it descends putting own name on the ball
  • B. Xl serves to X2 who heads the ball over 01
  • 02 can attack and return header
  • C. 01 serves the ball high into X grid. X players decide who Will attack the ball
  • 04 starts by being passive
  • D. Sl-S4 serve the ball in high to the prime target area
  • Decision between GK and Xl, X2 as to who attacks the ball. Sl-S4 follow in for rebounds and return crosses
  • Add 01& 02 then X3 & X4
