Practices
Half Volleys and Ground Shots at the Goalkeeper. Vary your distribution and
tailor your serve to the needs of the Goalkeeper.
1. Shots at the Keeper. Vary and keep the distribution realistic, shoot
in or around the Keeper. Here the Keeper has not got time to go down the line
so concentrate on Hand Shapes. Coach should be in position 1 on above diagram
for adults.
2. Sideshots. Coach should be in position 2 on above diagram for adults.
3. Catch or Parry decisions. Serve Hard,Soft or Long. Look for the decision
of the Goalkeeper.
4. On the Move. When to stop and set yourself. The Coach takes a touch
out of his feet and then shoots.
- Run forward to the Cone.
- Run backwards
from the Cone
5. No Hope Harry's. Crosses pulled back from the byline.
A) The Keeper must stand on the near post and try to get back into line. Alternate
posts. Try to stretch him but give him a chance to make the save.
B) Lying down at the post. He's made the save now he must get up for the
rebound. Vary posts. Give him a chance by getting the ball from out of your
feet or take another touch.
Try to keep it realistic.
6. Deflections. Dealing with unexpected situations. Use two players
as obstacles. They can move into line, out of the way or even get a touch. The
Keeper must go for the first shot but he must be prepared to improvise. Remember
rebounds and second saves.
7. Reaction Saves. The Keeper faces the goal with the Coach on the six-yard
box. Coach shouts turn and then throws the ball. Vary the distribution high, low
and to the body. If the Keeper is struggling get him to come off his line.
8. Pulled Back. The Keeper stands on the near post, the server sets up
Coach with a throw or pass and the Coach shoots any method towards goal. The
Keeper must get back into line. Coach can shoot from rebounds but always give
the Keeper a chance.
9. Long Range Shots. Vary the Coaches or servers position. Remember the
ball moves so plenty of dippers and swervers. The Keeper should always get
into line. When Coaching look for Hand Shapes, Positioning and Movement of
Feet.
