Saving in 1 v 1 Situations

The Block

Organisation

  • Start with players in positions 1 and 2 and progress to 3 and 4.
  • The Coach rolls the ball forward left or right for players to run onto.
  • The Keeper has to make a decision

Key Points

  1. Can I win the ball. When diving at feet go only if you are 100% sure you can win it and move quickly without hesitation.
  2. Should I stand Up. Keep low in the ready position, hands by your knees, make yourself big. Put pressure on the Attacker, stay on your feet and don't commit yourself. Don't go early.

Block the Ball if the Attacker is favourite to win it. Attack it if you are.

You are looking for a good decision backed by positive action.

  • The other Keeper tries to dribble the ball past the kicker.

Key Points

  • If you can't get it stand up and make yourself BIG. Get nice and low, hands around the knees.
  • If he losses control pounce.
  • If he gets too close smoother the ball.

Look for lots of competitiveness.
