Football Coaching Courses, a candidate's notes

Phase of Play, Small Sided Game and Functional Practice

These are the three coaching areas for The Coaching Licence.

A Phase of Play

Half or more of the pitch is used so the coach can work with groups of players. Only one goal is used because you are only Coaching one side Defence or Attack. Structured starting positions are vital.

Organisation

Two teams of 8 v 8 line up against each other in the 4-4-2 format.

Here Blues are Attacking with,

  • Two Full-backs
  • Four Midfield players
  • and two strikers.

and Reds are Defending with,

  • One Goalkeeper
  • Four Defenders
  • and Three midfield players.

These formations can be changed to suit your needs. For example if you want one less Red midfielder then you could use him as a target man instead of using a target area.

Small Sided Game

Half the pitch is used for a proper match with two goals.

Organisation
  • Pitch size is 70yds long by 50 yds wide or approximately.
  • Use the width of the pitch if possible.
  • Teams line up 8 v 8. So each team has
  • One Goalkeeper
  • Three Defenders
  • Two Midfield Players
  • and two Attackers.

Functional Practice

This is when an area of the pitch is reproduced in a small grid normally 20yds wide by 30yds long to work on samll groups of players. Functional practices are for taking one topic and working on it in a confined space.
See Winger crossing in a functional practice for other ideas.

Organisation
  • Here we have a 3 v 3 formation with two or three servers.
  • The servers pass to each other until an Attacker finds space and then they pass to him.
  • You don't need to have a goal. For example if your topic is "Forcing play in one direction" you might want to have a target area to pass or run through in the corner of the grid.
