Organisation
- Ball is lost to full back. Winger runs at the full back and losses
the ball to him.
- Lost ball centrally from defensive header. The ball is thrown up to
the central defender who headers the ball back to an opposing midfield player.
- Full back losses the ball to the opposing winger. This can be a bad
pass or a tackle.
From Wide and Deep Positions
Winger losses ball to full back
Let the players play for 2-3 minutes to get used to their roles and
positions. When you see your first Key Point step in.
- Switch On. Easy start say this with encouragement."Come on Guys switch
on and concentrate, we are at our most vulnerable when the ball is lost because
players have been drawn out of position".
- Pressure. "Who is the nearest man". Nearest man should always pressure the
ball.
- Speed of Approach. Stop, Demo, Rehearsal, Live."When should you approach
the attacker fast". When the ball is travelling to him.
- Angle or line of approach. Depends on where you want the attacker to go.
Stop, Demo, Rehearsal, Live; "Show me an approach which forces the attacker
inside (or outside)". Your approach should be slightly curved like this so
he only has one way to go. Make play predictable.
- Balance on approach. "When should you slow your approach". When the Attacker
has the ball. "Show me how to pressure the Attacker". Stop, Demo, Rehearsal,
Live; From 5-6 yds out defender should be slightly crouching, sideways on
already half turned, edge in slowly let the aAttacker make the decision-throw
a feint. You must only react to the movement of the ball. Be patient stay
on your feet don't reduce your side to 10 men by needlessly jumping in.
-
Cover and Balance. Stop, Demo, Rehearsal, Live; "He's gone
to the ball show me where you can support him". At 45 degree angle, if he
takes it round him you can come across to tackle and if he comes square
you can apply pressure to him. Stop, Demo, Rehearsal, Live. Covering players
show me a position where you can cover X1, X2, X3 etc defenders should be
no more than 4-6 yds away depending where they are on the pitch. Go along
the line. Fullbacks should tuck in, how much distance do you think you can
cover as the ball is travelling? Stop, Demo, Rehearsal, Live.
- Making play predictable. By reducing passing angles and oppertunites. Balance
the defendes so the attacker can only go one way. As with Cover but comanise
midfield as well.
- Compactness.Players must recover and exert pressure goalside of the Ball. The
space between the Defence and Attack must be as compact as possible. Stop,
Demo, Rehearsal, Live."Look at all this space. How can we reduce the space
and compact play". We can squeeze up- "go on move up". Make a captain for
communication and to hold lines. Stop, Demo, Rehearsal, Live."When an Attacker
is being challenged how can we further compact space" Step out. Look at goalkeepers
starting position. Stop, Demo, Rehearsal, Live.Show me where you should be
standing so firstly you can collect any over hit or through ball and secondly
you can't be lobbed or beaten by a long shot".
- Recovering Defenders. Lines of Recovery. Stop, Demo, Rehearsal, Live;
"Show me your run to get goalside of the ball". The run should be a direct
run to his own goal. When the ball is put into wide areas. Wide full back
should run in line with the back post, far post should run mid goal, mid goal
should mark near post, near post should go to the ball. Once goalside.
Stop, Demo, Rehearsal, Live."Once you have got goalside what are you options".
They are can I win the ball, can I cover a challenging player, can I mark someone
or can I mark space.
- Clearences. Stop, Demo, Rehearsal, Live."What must you be". First. You must
meet the ball as early as possible with determination."What should your clearance
have". Height, distance or width. Height favours the defence.
- Rebounds, switch on and concentrate be first and brave.
From central positions
Central Defender on the edge of the box headers to opposing Midfield player. Same
key points but add to
Pressure
Prevent opponents from turning. Stop, Demo, Rehearsal, Live."How close should
we be". Far enough to see the ball and also observe movement by the opponent.
Close enough to make an effective challenge should the opponent turn. The ideal
position is 2-3 yds out. Do we want to foul here. "When is the best time to
challenge". When the attacker is half turned because he ceases to shield the
ball and he is vulnerable in terms of balance. The defender will also have a
good view of the ball.
Defending
in the Defending 3rd against attacks from Central positions and Crosses.
