Keeping Your Head Up - Passing, Moving and Supporting the Ball

Warm Up

Organisation

  • A square grid of 30 metres x 30 metres.
  • You need lots of bodies.
  • The players get in groups of 3 with one ball between them.

Exercises

  1. Pass the ball between the 3 players and move. You can follow your ball or move into space. Any amount of touches.
  2. Now 2 touches, get into line to support the ball, make movements around the square, keep your head up and know where your pass is going. Don't stay in the same area move around the square.
  3. After your pass you must make a 10 yard run. Now play has opened up you must be aware of where your team mates are.
  4. Play short pass then next pass must be long. Short, long, short, long etc. You will have to pull away to receive the ball. Therefore 1st player runs short to receive a pass from player 2, he then plays long to player 3 who will have peeled off, player 2 then comes short to receive the ball.
  5. Same as above but no talking!You must have awareness of where your players are. Play with your head up.
6 v 4 + 2 Keep Ball
Organisation
  • Grid is still 30 metre x 30 metres.
  • 6 attacking players keep the ball against 4 defenders.
  • Two players stand out as targets.
  • If the defenders win the ball they must pass to their spare men, they become attackers and their two team mates come in, two of the defending 6 then go out.

Rules

  1. Five passes equals 1 goal for the attackers. Can you keep the ball, use your body shape and can you pass it to the safe foot.
  2. Now 10 passes equals 1 goal. When you win the ball you should look to get it out as soon as possible. Make sure you have movement to play it long or short.
  3. To get out now you must win the ball, pass it out and receive a pass to any of the defenders. Spare man only has one touch. He should be on the tips of his toes ready concentrating.
  4. Now choose which two players go out

Keep Ball in a Small Sided Game
Organisation
  • Pitch is 70 metres x 50 metres.
  • Teams play 5 v 5 +1 target man each.
  • No goalkeepers to start.
  • Target man must stay in the target area.

The Game

Pass and movement,can you get your head up !

  1. You must pass to the target man and get his return before you can score.Change target man regularly.Look forward and pass it to the target man at the earliest moment.Front man try to hold it up until supporting players arrive.If the ball has been played long players must work hard to support the front man.
  2. Put Keepers in and now  one touch finish.
  3. Finish with target man only allowed one touch.Therefore first time lay off.
