Organisation

  • 6 v 2 + 1 Goalkeeper.
  • Starting position is forward with the ball runs at the defence.
  • Two forwards dribble with the ball and dive for free kick.
  • The Goalkeeper must organise his wall quickly and effectively.

Key Points

  1. Assessment. Do I need a wall or not, depending on angle and distance.
  2. Decision. Number of players in the wall. The tallest man should always be second from the end to counter act the chip shot. He should be in line with the near post because it is the most vulnerable.
  3. Communication-
    • When = Early
    • How = Load and clear with authority.
    • What = Very specific.i.e.1 step to the left.
  4. Responsibilities. Individual or collective. Give players a number, all game they should be that number. If 3 players needed 1, 2 and 3 will make the wall. This should be practised before hand and numbers should be pre-arranged for subs.
  5. Starting Position. Goalkeeper should always expect a shot.
  6. Technique of dealing with a shot or cross.
  7. Clearing penalty area-communication.
  8. Second save
Goalkeeping from Set Pieces, Corners
The London FA Goalkeeping Licence.
