Attacking: Forward Runs Without the Ball

KEY FACTORS

TWO TYPES OF RUNS

  • A. Runs to create space
  • B. Runs to exploit space

RUNS TO CREATE SPACE

  • Running from in front of the ball
  • Inside-out diagonal runs
  • Outside-in diagonal runs
  • Running from behind the ball
  • Overlap runs
  • Diagonal runs

RUNNING TO EXPLOIT SPACE

  • Running from in front of the ball
    • Diagonal run across the defender
    • Diagonal run wrong footing the defender by checking and changing direction
    • Combination of a diagonal pass with diagonal run
  • Running from behind the ball
    • Overlap run
    • Movement from behind the ball into space created by movement in front of the ball

ORGANISATION, DIRECTION AND PROGRESSION

  • Condition restarts where runs will be made, otherwise unrealistic situations will occur
  • Good rehearsal will be required so that players understand:
    • Runs to create space
    • Runs to exploit space
