Goalkeeping: Reaction Time Exercises

The Key elements are Speed of thought, Quick hands and feet, hand to eye co-ordination and decision making.

Practises

1. Call the ball. The Coach stands 2-3 yards away and makes one of these calls

  • High right
  • Low right
  • High left
  • Low left

and throws the ball there. The Keeper must respond with a save. Progress by throwing dummies and throwing the ball to a different position than you called.

2. Spin and Save. The Keeper has his back to the coach. The Coach shouts turn and then shoots. The Keeper turns and makes the save.

3. Deflections. Dealing with unexpected situations. Use two players as obstacles. They can move into line, out of the way or even get a touch. The Keeper must go for the first shot but he must be prepared to improvise. Remember rebounds and second saves.
