Defending in the Defending 3rd Against Attacks from Central positions and Crosses, in a Phase of Play

Starting Positions
  1. Lost Ball to Full-back who passes to the Winger.
  2. Lost Ball centrally from a Defensive header.
  3. Full-back losses Ball to Winger.
Key Points
  1. Switch on,
  2. Pressure the ball, nearest man go to the ball.
  3. Cover. Angles and distance.
  4. Make play predictable .Force the play in one direction.
  5. Compactness.
    • Holding the line compacts play.
    • Squeezing when play is going back out.
    • Step up when they have the ball but there is pressure on it.
  6. Balance of defence. Full-backs coming round or in to cover. As cross looks likely mark space.
  7. Lines of recovery.
    • Wide or furthest Full-back should mark back post.
    • Defender far post should come in to mark mid goal.
    • Defender mid goal should move across to near post.
  8. Clearances, be first,your clearance should have,
    • Height,
    • Distance,
    • or Width.
