Dealing With Crosses

Organisation
  • The pitch is 60yds x 40yds with two corridors of 5yds x 40yds.
  • One player stands in each corridor and he attacks either goal. He runs unchallenged and is allowed two touches before crossing. Get crosses in !
  • Try to progress to one touch.
  • The game is played with 4 v 4 plus 2 Keepers. The players stay in their  20 yds x 50 yds area.
  • Alternate the  wingers and goals.
  • The goalkeeper throws to one of his forwards, the defenders let him get it, the forward then passes to either of the wingers in the corridors. They must cross the ball in.

Key Points
  1. Starting Position and depth of the defenders.
If the ball is out wide the Goalkeeper should be positioned nearer the back post, just off centre like in diagram 1. Because it is far easier to go forwards than it is backwards. The goalkeeper should get some distance (should be a safe distance) off the goalline so he can get further forward. He must have an open stance, to be in a position to see all the play even the backpost for blind side runs (45 degrees)
  2. Assessment of ball. Is it going near post? far post? how fast? what trajectory? is it curling?
  3. Decision.
"Should I stay or should I go". You must judge the flight and pace of the ball. Can you deal with it?
  4. communicate your decision. Either "Keepers" or "Away".
If you decide to stay shout "Away" and get back onto your line to save a possible shot or header. The further you are from the ball, the more time you have to make the save. Look for pushing out, squeezing and compactness. If you decide to come you must get some contact on the ball however slight.
  5. Angle of approach. Down the line of the ball, take off into the ball on the inside leg, so your outside leg is bent for protection. If you take off with your outside foot you may get caught and spin.
  6. Timing of tack off. Don't go to early.
  7. Technique, can you Catch.'W' Hand shape. Don't catch the ball at the very highest point because you become frail and the ball is easily knocked out of your hands. You should catch the ball in your vision. Punch. You should get height, distance or width. Deflect to safety. If you misjudge the flight you must still get a touch. Technique of Punch. Two handed.
  8. Second saves.
