Creating Space In and Around the Penalty Area

Work in fours either side of the pitch in this shape.Alternate sides.

1. The Overlap
  • The Full back passes to the Forwards feet and then runs behind the Winger and down the wing,
  • the Forward plays it short to the Winger who passes square to the Midfield player.
  • The Midfield player plays the Full back in down the line.
  • The Full back then crosses.
  • The Winger, Forward and Midfielder should all run into the penalty area to finish the Full backs cross.

2. Coming inside to shoot
  • The Full back passes to the Forwards feet and then runs between the Midfielder and Forward towards the goal,
  • the Forward passes short to the Midfielder,who passes square to the winger.
  • The Winger then plays the Full back in for a shot on goal.
  • The Winger, Forward and Midfielder should all run into the penalty for rebounds or a lay off.
  • Full back should be positive.

3. The Lay off
  • The Full back passes to the Forwards feet,
  • the Midfielder and Winger cross diagonally,
  • the Forward lays the ball into either of their paths.
  • The supporting players should all run into the penalty area to finish the cross or for rebounds.

4. The Flick
  • The Full back passes to the Forwards feet,
  • the Midfielder and Winger cross diagonally,
  • the Forward flicks the ball into either of their paths.
  • The supporting players should all run into the penalty area to finish the cross or for rebounds.
5. Back Heel
  • The Full back passes to the Forwards feet,
  • the Midfielder and Winger cross diagonally,
  • the Forward bach heels the ball into either of their paths.
  • The supporting players should all run into the penalty area to finish the cross or for rebounds.
6. Turn
  • The Full back passes to the Forwards feet,
  • the Forward turns in limited space and passes the ball into the Midfielders or the Wingers path or runs on himself to shoot or cross.
  • The supporting players should all run into the penalty area to finish the cross or for rebounds.
  • Full back should shout turn.
7. Free play
  • The Full back passes to the Forwards feet, the other players do any of the above moves
8. Switch play
  •   Full back passes to opposite Full back,then same as Free play.
9. 4 v 4 Game
  • Now use half a pitch and add four Defenders.
  • Put a Defender on the Forward, Midfielder and Winger.
  • One Defender acts as a server (0),
  • he passes to the Full back and then becomes a tracking Defender.
  • The Full back is allowed one touch, on his second the Defenders become alive.
  • Use the above drills, don't have the Defenders too close together, create time and space and try to finish with a goal.
