Coaching on Artificial Surfaces

Considerations when working on artificial surfaces

  1. Safety!! The key element.
  2. Space-are others playing.
  3. Equipment -is there a goal.
  4. Players-number of Keepers and players.
  5. Clothing-padded protection.
  6. Time available-approximately 1 hour.
  7. Bounce of the ball.
  8. Weather.
  9. Overuse injuries-not too much long diving.
  10. Smaller goals-practise pick ups and shots to the body.
  11. Medical bag-first aid.
The following exercises should be considered when working on artificial surfaces
  1. Ball familiarity-no restrictions.
  2. Dealing with the backpass-no restrictions.
  3. Handling:the four handshapes-restricted to diving from a kneeling position.
  4. Footwork exercises-no restrictions except no diving.
  5. Shot-stopping-defending small goals only.
  6. Positioning-handball game no diving.
  7. Diving at feet-from kneeling position.
  8. Reaction work-rebound work from a wall into a small goal.
  9. Dealing with crosses-no restrictions.
  10. Distribution-no restrictions.
  11. Supporting the defence.
  12. organisationof set pieces-no restrictions.
  13. Penalties-theory only.
