Circle Play

For more Circle warm ups see A Matchday Warm Up or Interchange Circles

Centre Player

Organisation

Grid is the centre circle. Have a three yard square coned off in the middle. Start with one player in the middle cones and the rest divided out along the centre circle.

Divide the squad into two teams. Using one ball, pass to the player in the centre square who controls with one touch and passes to a player of the opposite team with the second touch. Each player follows his pass.

Players in the middle

Organisation

Grid can be the centre circle or enlarge the area depending on age, amount and ability of players. A square is placed in the middle.

Divide the squad into two teams with each player having a partner in the other team, one ball per pair. One team plays inside the square, the other team serves the ball into the centre. Players in the square control the ball and play back to their partner, they then run through the square to take a pass of a different server and then back again to their partner.

Giving an Angle

Organisation

Grid is the centre circle, place players around the circle and two players inside.

The two centre players stay in the middle until changed.

Start with an outside player passing in to either player (here A), player B now makes a supporting angle for the pass. Player A now passes to player B, B has a touch and then passes it out to any player on the circle. Players A and B now make supporting angles to the player on the ball. The player on the ball passes to either player. Make sure all players get a turn in the middle.

Overlapping Play

Organisation

Grid is the centre circle, place players around the circle and one player inside

  • Start with an outside player passing to the man in the middle here player 4.
  • Player 4 passes to any player on the circle, player 1 and closes him down.
  • Players 2 and 3 (the players on each side of player 1) now overlap player 1, player 1 plays either player in, here player 2.
  • Player 2 relaxes into the circle and passes to any player on the circle and closes him down.
  • Player 4 moves into player 2's position. Repeat.

Variation is only one player overlaps, the coach says players on the left overlap etc.

communication is very important, hold it, hold it, now play me in
