Defending: Being Compact and Making Play Predictable

Key Points

  • Forward players must work hard to recover and adopt a defensive position
  • Rear players must exert pressure by pushing up when the ball is played forward
  • Early decisions by players to exert pressure on the ball - challenging players
  • Good communication by supporting player on decision - (body stance of challenging players) to force direction of play
  • Good movement by supporting players to provide compactness - from in front and from behind the ball
  • Decision of players who cannot affect play to provide an outlet when possession is regained
