Attacking Centrally in a Functional Practice

Organisation

The pitch is separated into two main areas.

Area 1

  • Grid 20 x 20 yds
  • In area 1 the midfield players play 4 v 2 to play the ball into the forwards.
  • They must have four touches before playing the ball into area 2.
  • There are also two servers who play the ball to the forwards when asked in a 10 x 10 yd grid.

Area 2

  • Grid 20x20 yds
  • Two forwards and two defenders play 2 v 2.
  • There is also a off side line.
  • The forwards must try to score.

5. Push Up

Being able to see and play forward, angle, distance and timing of support. Body and feet position (can you step in or roll off). Awareness of situation on winning the ball. Lose markers -use markers. Stepping on the outside shoulder to go inside. Does he go and mark you or does he risk getting turned. Run the defenders together. Keep the ball moving. If space behind me come short and sprint back (opposite movement). Where does his first touch go.
Use the top half of your body to spin . Pull off the defenders shoulder to allow midfield player to come through. Playing in spaces in front of the keeper. Look for runs across face then duck in "push runs". Blindside runs. Drifting off the back. Shifting the ball into angle "cutting".The deeper you go the less space behind them. If the attackers are going to switch positions then the attacker nearest the ball must make the decision when to. We are looking for timing off the centre backs.

Six ideas for forwards movements in central areas

Movement

  • Forward (F)1 runs across F2's path
  • F2 runs into the space behind where F1 has come from.
  • Player on the ball has options depending on movements of defendersimage

Movement

  • F1 runs across F2's path in a diagonal run towards Midfielder (M) 4.
  • M3, passes firmly towards F1's run
  • F1 dummies the ball and carries his run past F2
  • F2 plays the ball for F1 to run onto
