1 v 1 Small Sided Game

Organisation
  • Pitch is 60yds x 40yds.
  • It is divided into 3. 20yds x 40yds zones like shown below.
  • You can play any amount of players here its 7 v 7.
  • Each team consists of 1 Goalkeeper and the rest of the team in the middle zone only.
The Practice

The Goalkeeper starts with the ball. One defender from the centre zone comes short to pick up the Keepers pass. Here reds have the ball, they must now work it through the middle zone and break into the end zone. Only one red and one blue can break into the end zone at a time. One attacker and one defender.

The idea of the practice is to condense play in the middle third to create a breakaway situation. You can either dribble through or latch onto a through pass. If your not getting any joy then take a defending player out, remember you must be able to Coach the session so give yourself a chance.

My Exam Notes

My topic was Dealing with 1 v 1 situations in a small sided game. organisation as above. I divided it into two sections

  1. When the ball is played into space behind the defence.
  2. When an opponent dribbles through the defence with good control.
Starting Position

Depends where the ball is. Always expect a shot, your first priority is not to be beaten by a shot. Should be advanced enough to intercept any over hit ball and close enough so you can't be beaten by a direct shot or chip. Get onto line and be ready for the through ball.

The ball is played into space behind the defence

Assess the situation

Resist the temptation to react instinctively and instead weigh up the situation. What is the distance between the nearest opponent and the ball. Position of nearest challenging defender, is there any supporting players. Don't rush in.

Your Decision

Block if the attacker is favourite to win it, attack it if you are.

Can I get the ball ? If yes-move quickly without hesitation, in the last few paces you will need to decide whether to dive or not. Looking for good decision backed by positive action. If you arrive at the same time, I want mental aggression and determination not to be beaten. communicate Keepers.

If No- Be patient don't commit yourself, don't go too early, make it as difficult as possible for the attacker. Put pressure on the attacker and stay on your feet. Give your defenders time to get back by holding him up.

Technique of Saves

Up and along the line.Good attitude to save-be brave.Dive into the path of the ball. One hand on top and the other behind the ball to trap it. Bring the ball quickly into the chest, tuck in arms and legs.

You should lead with hands to present widest barrier possible. Raise arm if necessary to prevent chip. Leading with your feet reduces the barrier.

General rule.If he is right footed look to dive to your left.If he is left footed look to dive to your right.

Second Save

Good positive attitude. Recover in the line of the goal.

The Opponent dribbles through the defence and has good control

Assess

Don't react instinctively-assess the situation .Evaluate the ball carriers control, pace and position of nearest defender.

Decision 1

Player losses control

Block if the attacker is favourite to win it,attack it if you are.

Decision 2

Player has good control.

Move cautiously up the line and put pressure on the attacker.Try to force him wide so the defence can get back.Be patient, don't commit yourself-don't go early.Look for bad control and pounce. Smoother if he gets too close or has a bad touch.

Stand Up.The opponent is likely to shoot hard and low close to the Keeper,so you should keep low in the ready position, hands by your knees and be prepared to save at his feet. Make yourself big. Only dive if your sure you can win the ball. Dont foul him,you could be sent off.

Make the attacker make the mistake,he is thinking

  1. Should I go round the Keeper.
  2. Chip him,
  3. Sidefoot,
  4. Blast the ball.

Don't make his decision easy by rushing in.

Throw a Dummy to encourage the attackers decision.

Second Save and Recovery

Good positive attitude. Recover in the line of the goal.
